THE 2010 FFLP APPLICATION PERIOD has CLOSED!

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE WAS:  JULY 1st

The 2010 FFLP Grant Awards application period has now closed. This year we estimate there will be $50,000 available for grant awards. The numerous grant applications that have been submitted will now be checked for completeness, the data entered into a spreadsheet, copied and sent to the Grant Review Committee members.  It is expected that grant awards will be chosen and checks prepared by early September.  Good luck and thank you to all who applied.

IFCA Vice-President of Operations Doug Brown and Caldwell FD Fire Prevention Officer Melinda Allgood point to a FFLP plate on Melinda's personal vehicle.  They are holding a publicity check to the Caldwell FD for $1,000.

For ten years now (2001 to 2010) Idaho's Fire Fighter License Plate grant program has been a resounding success!  Close to $400,000 in grants have been distributed to fire agencies and organizations all over Idaho to support a variety of worthy fire safety education efforts!  The IFCA thanks everyone who purchases these custom Firefighter license plates that help support Idaho's fire services.  Thank You!

About the"FFLP" Grant Program . . .

In 2000, the Idaho State Legislature passed legislation authorizing this special program. The purpose of the program is to provide grants to help fund "safety education of firefighters, fire chiefs and the public."

The IFCA was chosen by the Legislature to administer the program. Management costs are 3% of the annual program revenue which means that there is roughly a 97% "pass-through" of money for awards.  This compares to a typical 20% administrative fee rate for many other grant programs. The program has grown significantly since its inception with 79 applications received in 2009 and $57,203 paid out in grant awards.

Grant award winners range from the big departments to the smallest.  Typically all who apply usually get funded, some totally, but most partially.  The largest grants made are usually a couple thousand dollars. In 2009 the average grant award was $867.

Grants have helped fund a wide range of fire safety education supplies and programs.  They include: fire prevention materials, smoke detectors, training conferences, safety symposiums, laptop computers, overhead projectors, public education campaigns, training programs, fire danger warning signs, Smokey Bear and Sparky costumes, literature, prevention DVD's, etc.

The IFCA's Grant Review Committee is chaired by IFCA President Dean Ellis (Idaho Falls FD).  IFCA Board Member Kevin Gray (Blackfoot FD) and IFCA Life Member Bill Cowin are the other two IFCA reps on the committee. For 2010 the committee has been expanded and  representatives were added from Idaho's other two big fire associations.  Those reps are: Tom Moore (Boise FD) from the Professional Fire Fighters of Idaho (PFFI) and Kevin Courtney (Star FD) from the Idaho Volunteer Fire & Emergency Services Association (IVFESA).   Committee members receive no compensation for their time. Committee business is usually accomplished via teleconference calls.

The IFCA awards the grants once each year. The awards are made from available funds received through the Fire Fighter’s License Plate (FFLP) fund program. The money is collected by the Idaho Department of Transportation from all County Department of Motor Vehicle sites.  A portion of the automobile registration fee from purchasers (or renewing) owners of the special Fire Fighter License plates goes into the fund.  The plates are available at all forty-four Idaho County Department of Motor Vehicle offices.

These popular personalized license plates are available to any Idaho resident for their personal vehicle(s).  Contact your local DMV office for details.  A portion of your registration fee will go toward the FFLP program which funds fire prevention and education efforts statewide.

For more information on this program or any questions please contact the IFCA's business office at idahofirechiefs@gmail.com or call us at 208-890-9397.
